Oh. Good. Lord.
Green cabbage has done it again! You win... you always do...
For those who don't know what I'm talking about, there's a thing called a Green Cabbage Tour in Northern Germany A.K.A. Gruenkohl Tour. It's one of the strangest things I may have ever heard of, but when it's explained... you kinda just think... Okay! Why not?!
Here's the deal:
You get a group of people together (typically larger groups, ours just being almost 200 employees of Engelbrecht).
You meet up, outside, in the freezing cold, prepared to walk and drink... excessively (I mean, how else are you planning on standing the cold weather?).
You then end at a destination to eat Gruenkohl (green cabbage) and lots of meat. I can honestly say I had a large pile of green cabbage, plus 5 different kinds of pork on my plate. No lie.
You then party some more.
As an American, it's about the craziest thing you've ever heard. There's nothing like it in the U.S. But, like I said, when explained... you just nod your head and say, "Sure! Sounds like fun!"
I was at the Green Cabbage party for the past two years, so I knew the drill. But I gotta say, I was not prepared. It's about 48 hours later, and I'm still paying for it. The kilometers of walking on just about the coldest day of the year, the drinking, the dancing, the drinking, the dancing. It takes a toll on the body! Even my 24-year-old body!
However, for my last Tour... I have to say it'll be something in Germany that I will miss! It's some of the most fun I've had!
Since I love green cabbage and pork this would be right down my alley!
ReplyDeleteDancing - some. I'm 67 now! Drinking. Maybe one.
Then I'd be finished. And if I were you I'd miss the green cabbage party as well. When are you coming home??? What a tour and education you've had. I've loved reading your blog about baking all the delightful treats you've made. Wow. God bless.

Barb! I'll be coming home in July when I finish with my final exam. The time will pass by fast!
DeleteThank you so much for reading :)
Wow that sounds like fun, yes the Americans friends I know might need a cab half way through, haha. This sounds like wonderful fun!!!!
ReplyDeleteNow, that is something different. I made stuffed cabbages yesterday, and I always add lots of extra cabbage to the dish, just cause I love it that way. Sounds like a lot of fun, but not sure I could last long enough to get to the green cabbage! What fun interesting things you are learning of their culture.
ReplyDeleteThere's a little glitch in the urls of the three food photos that are just under the Followers on the right hand side.
ReplyDeleteI think you can translate Gruenkohl as Kale :)
